Curtains, drapes, et al
Sitting in the cosy comfort of our rooms with drapes hanging around windows – blocking light from entering our luxury, offering valuable privacy to our secret nothings, adorning our otherwise ordinary room design, have we ever wondered who invented curtains and what would have happened had we not had curtains to protect us from unwanted light, unsolicited enthusiasm, and boring home interior?
Curtains are so much a part of our life that we have come to take them for granted. Our daily routine that asks and answers umpteen number of questions, never comes across the above questions about curtains.
Curtains are believed to be is use as early as 3000 BC. Evidences suggest that ancient Egyptians used to hang animal hides as curtains to keep out freezing winds entering their homes. Curtains in the present-day shape were introduced in the 15th century households of the rich.
What purpose do curtains serve?
· Block the light
· Provide privacy
· Decorate the window
Yes they do. They prevent unwanted light coming into your being and disrupt a well-spent day. They provide you much wanted privacy from inquisitive peeps and uninvited interests. They even can decorate an otherwise monotonous window.
Where do we use curtains?
· Homes
· Offices
· Hospitals/Clinics
A home curtain fulfils all the three purposes listed above. It highlights the light and shades in the room and helps to maintain the home ambience. It helps keep the interiors private from the strangers’ eyes. And most importantly it enhances the room décor by just hanging on the window.
In offices a curtain is often used to maintain the interior decorum and at times to provide confidentiality to management meetings and presentations.
Curtains serve a greater purpose in hospitals & clinics. They provide the most important privacy to patients. A range of purpose-made curtains are available for use in medical set ups.
The story of curtains does not end here. Blinds, shades, and drapes fall in the same category too.
